Contract Type: Fixed Term (12 months)

Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire

We propose an exciting opportunity for a placement year student to work in Soft Matter in the Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) group to work on a topic relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when microbes evolve mechanisms to protect themselves against available medicines and is one of the leading threats to global public health. In order to combat AMR and develop new medicines to fight microbes, we must understand the interaction between microbes and antimicrobial agents, for which we can use SANS to probe.

During your placement year in the SANS group at ISIS, you will use SANS to explore such interactions to help further our understanding of AMR, with the support of the other scientists in the SANS group. You will first learn more about the technique, how we can use it to perform structural studies, and gain experience using advanced instruments at ISIS. You will need to have a passion for learning new concepts and performing experiments, with an interest both in the practical aspect and the analysis of measurements. The role also offers the opportunity to work alongside many scientists, engineers, and technicians with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. This would allow for you to gain valuable insight into a research career, building upon both technical skills and soft skills – relevant for all career paths.

Brief overview of the scheme
