Join a spectroscopy applications and development group at the Central Laser Facility’s ULTRA facility. We’re developing applications of ultrafast time resolved infrared (IR) spectroscopy for problems in catalysis, fuel cell science and battery science and helping to design and build new instruments for the ULTRA facility’s new HiLUX project – a multimillion pound investment in spectroscopy facilities. IR spectroscopy is all about the behaviour of molecules and we do IR spectroscopy with some of the worlds most sophisticated laser and detector systems. You could help build and test a new spectroscopic technique, take on one of our spectroscopy studies of an exotic material or chemical reaction, or enter the world of computational chemistry to conduct simulations of the molecular systems we’re interested in. CLF ULTRA is a national facility serving UK academia and industry and you will therefore also get experience of the many aspects of professional science service provision.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities

This is a role involving scientific research and will be fulfilling if as a scientist you are a chemist leaning towards experimental physical chemistry or catalysis, or if you are a physicist interested in spectroscopy, optics, lasers and molecular quantum mechanics. We can consider a computational chemistry project placement if you are confident with the theory. Your placement will allow time for learning/development before taking on several projects and helping with operational aspects of the R&D group and ULTRA facility. For the ULTRA facility, 2025-26 will be a year where a lot of equipment will be arriving for the new HiLUX labs. Some of your time will therefore be spent with the team in the new labs helping to create the new instruments.

Key duties / responsibilities:

Take on scientific research projects* – research, plan, execute and writeup

Assist in R&D group / ULTRA operational tasks – maintain equipment, purchase materials/equipment and help with administrative tasks

Contribute to research culture of facility – take professional interest in R&D group projects and ULTRA facility activities, participating in group meetings, seminars and discussions
