Context

The importance of evidence, analysis, insight and data for place has risen substantially in the last year, and the reality of the place work is that it takes much more than the current resources allocated to this.

A core part of the analytical need is for UKRI to demonstrate its impact and its support for government priorities. This includes the development of timely forecasts, geographic distribution of spend data to enable UKRI to support the government agenda, as well as insight to support decision making on achieving the organisation’s place based outcomes. For these analytical objectives, there is a need to liaise across the organisation with strategy, finance, comms and data colleagues in order to provide a UKRI wide picture reflective of the organisation’s place-based activity.

You will be an analyst that produces the data on the geographic distribution of UKRI funding on a timely and robust basis, including analysing and synthesising input from across UKRI. You will also use that data to derive insight and evidence. You will have access to senior and executive leaders providing  both regular and ad hoc analysis and dashboarding as appropriate to support their decisions, and support policy teams with statistical analysis from a range of sources. The nature of the role and the analytical responsibilities of the role holder will be agile and the tasks will evolve as the strategic direction of UKRI’s place strategy develops, in line with the essential skills as outlined below.

The role holder will have direct linkages into the UKRI Policy Analysis team, who will be leading task management and the roleholder’s projects to ensure alignment and synergy with broader place-related analysis. We are committed to supporting each other’s personal and professional development and will support your learning and development ambitions in this role.

Key Areas of Accountability

  • Build and regularly maintain an analytical model that enables the reporting of UKRI’s forecasted geographic distribution of spend, including testing different scenarios and incorporating new data as spending trajectories evolve
  • Deliver ad-hoc pieces of analysis relating to place investment responding to the place function needs (including understanding regional leverage), supporting Monitoring and Evaluation of UKRI’s place interventions
  • Work in an integrated way with the Place analysis team and investment strategy team, as well as with colleagues in other directorates across UKRI (for example those within the data teams of the organisation)
  • Assist with quality assurance checks when required; ensuring that the team Quality Assurance process is followed at all times and making sure that QA approvals are escalated as necessary
  • To provide support to stakeholders, responding to queries and providing advice:
    • By addressing internal and external queries as required, including liaison with the investment strategy, place function group and engagement colleagues’ ask for place-based evidence
  • Liaising across teams to identify suitable evidence and datasets to support place analysis
