Salary: £36,650 per annum 
Hours: Full time or Part time (minimum 0.8 FTE) 
Contract Type: Open Ended.
Location: Polaris House, Swindon, Wiltshire (Hybrid Working Available)

Quality Assurance and Reviews Managers provide essential support to the delivery of the annual assurance programme for units, institutes, Centres of Research Excellence and other strategic investments. They also provide support with other projects within the team including strategic and scientific reviews. 

Reporting to the Programme Manager for Large Investments (Assurance), this role will suit a proactive individual with experience in project and risk management. You will get the opportunity to be a key contributor to the management of the annual assurance process for MRC’s large investments. You will also be involved in the organisation and facilitation of strategic and scientific reviews; the latter which assess the quality of scientific research and determine the future funding level for MRC Large Investments. Activities will include overseeing the effective peer review of applications, gathering strategic advice from a range of stakeholders, and providing advice to internal and external stakeholders.  

Assurance and Reviews Managers are responsible for:

  • Managing the collection and the review of the annual governance, science and management account returns
  • Engaging with relevant stakeholders throughout the assurance process
  • Collating and summarising complex information to inform meetings and decision making.
  • Supporting the development and improvement of the assurance and reviews processes
  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of Centers of Research Excellence (CoREs) and institute scientific reviews and other strategic reviews as appropriate 

The role also includes 

  • Supporting in the production of papers outlining progress, risks and issues for MRC’s Senior Executive Team
  • Support in the organisation and execution annual engagement meetings and oversight meetings with partner organisations
  • Supporting issue resolution and responses to queries
  • Drafting award letters and financial profiles ensuring appropriate sign off is received before issuing
  • Ensuring the efficient organisation of records and documents within agreed file structures and policies
  • Carrying out any other duties that may be required of the post as delegated by the line manager 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Relevant degree or demonstratable equivalent experience (S)
  • Proactive with experience of planning, managing, and delivering projects or programmes (S/I)
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and flexibly adapt to a fluid environment (S/I)
  • Experience of working with or supporting senior staff/managers and/or external stakeholders (S/I)
  • Ability to handle, analyse and manage complex information (S/I)
  • Is numerate, with attention to detail, and is able to understand and manipulate financial data (S)
  • Excellent communication skills – written and oral and able to adapt style to audience(S/I)
  • Ability to effectively negotiate and influence with stakeholders at all levels (I)
  • Fully competent in using routine Microsoft applications (S)
  • Experience of working with an Electronic Records Management system (ERM) (S)

Desirable

  • Experience in people/project/process management (S)
  • Experience of working in the research and innovation/ university sector, or demonstratable understanding of the sector (S)
