As part of UK Research and Innovation, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations and operates at a number of sites within the UK, including the Daresbury Laboratory (DL) and many more around the world. The Laboratory is a leading centre for the design, build and operation of particle accelerators and other scientific equipment.

Our Technology Department within STFC provides advanced technology and engineering in support of both STFC funded activities and other high profile international projects.

Based at Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington, the Projects and Mechanical Engineering (PME) group is responsible for the delivery of mechanical engineering and project management for a range of high-profile scientific projects. The PME group collaborates with countries all over the world to create vital and exciting scientific equipment. Mechanical Design Engineers are involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from design concept to end of use therefore the undergraduate will have the opportunity to further their technical knowledge, CAD experience, project management skills and more.

Within the group there will be multiple opportunities to gain a varied experience, including CAD design, analytical and problem solving, hands-on work, testing and assembly, project planning and more. Dedicated training will be provided in the required areas, and we will support and guide you throughout the placement ensuring you get the most out of your time with us.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities

For the Year in Industry within the PME group the undergraduate roles will be that of a Mechanical/Design engineer.

Contributing to:

  • The concept design of components, assemblies and sub-systems.
  • The detailed design of components and production of engineering drawings to BS:8888.
  • Procurement of components.
  • Completion of finite element analyses (Mechanical/ANSYS).
  • Completion of stress and thermal calculations.

Completion of survey work when required, including use of laser tracker and spatial analyser.

  • Completion of supporting mechanical work, e.g. fluid flow calculations, magnet design etc.
  • Production of posters, papers and presentations when required.
  • Working within ISO9001:2015 quality system incorporating continuous improvement (CIP).
  • Develop personal competencies by completing relevant training courses.

Essential:

  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S)
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S)
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2025 (S)
  • Has an interest in science and/or engineering (S&I)
  • Excellent communications skills (I)
  • Ability to understand and explain technical concepts effectively (S&I)
  • Good IT skills including MS Office (S)
  • Good written communication skills (S)

Desirable:

  • Enrolled on a related undergraduate degree course (S)
  • Any previous work experience (S&I)
  • Experience working in a team (S&I)
