Our Strategy, Planning and Communications Directorate brings together the core functions that are needed to help shape, communicate and monitor progress against STFC’s strategic plans. Our role is to enable the organisation to determine its strategic direction and translate this into a coherent set of plans, communicating these across the organisation.

The Evidence and Impact team is responsible for evaluating the impact STFC’s investments make for society and the economy, both to demonstrate their value and inform future funding decisions. This information is disseminated through an array of media to inform a range of stakeholders including, but not limited to, Government ministers, international collaborators and STFC internal strategy decision-makers as well as the general public.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the Output Evaluation Manager to collect and assess data from across STFC, including Researchfish*, encompassing all aspects of science impact as well as equality, diversity, inclusion and environmental data.
  • Work with the Evaluation team to set up a new data collection interface and database for STFC facilities and programmes, to allow non-burdensome development of evidence base, evaluation and automated reporting to allow presentation of predetermined milestones.
  • Preparation of data assessments to present to internal and external stakeholders, within the SPC directorate, STFC, the parent organisation UKRI and members from the other 8 constituent organisations.
  • Attend cross-UKRI user group(s) on related subjects as the STFC representative, communicating STFC’s position on certain matters and ensuring topics and policies discussed are fit for purpose for STFC’s research community.
  • Principal contact for user enquiries regarding data portals used by STFC such as Researchfish and Dimensions.
  • Opportunities for development in further aspects of evaluation and stakeholder engagement will be made available as they arise, including supporting the wider E&I Team and STFC Senior Management in activities relevant to evaluation and the impact agenda such as impact reporting, STFC’s strategy, evidence for Spending Reviews and other Government reviews.

  • Obtained your first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2019, 2020 or be due to receive it in 2021
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • The right to live and work in the UK

Essential Criteria:

  • Obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2019, 2020 or be due to receive it in 2021 
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above 
  • The right to live and work in the UK 
  • Experience with data processing platforms such as Excel, Access or mainstream equivalents 
  • Previous use of SQL server or demonstrable aptitude to learn new data analysis software 
  • Excellent communications skills 
  • Excellent analytical skills 
  • Experience of building good team-working relationships

Desirable Criteria:

  • Proficient use of SQL 
  • Previous experience processing large quantities of data 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Power BI, XML and/or Tableau
