About UKRI International Shared Capability 

 

UKRI International Directorate is a ‘shared capability’ of UKRI which comprises UKRI International Development (ODA research and innovation) and UKRI International (‘non-ODA’ research and innovation), which collectively includes: 

  • International, which coordinates UKRI international research and innovation, including with Europe.  

  • International Development, focused on the UKRI Official Development Assistance (ODA) programmes, partnerships and policies. 

  • 4 offices overseas teams - Brussels, China, India and North America.   

  • Units that we host - UKCDR (UK Collaborative Development on Research) and the BEIS ODA (Official Development Assistance) Research Management team GCRF Challenge Leaders who are responsible for the building and success of individual GCRF challenge portfolios 

As a shared capability of UKRI we work in close partnership with the individual Councils’ international teams, other UKRI departments, as well as key stakeholders nationally and internationally to deliver policy, advice, bilateral and multilateral partnerships across the international R&D spectrum.

 

We are responsible for development and management of UKRI’s international partnerships with counterpart agencies globally and we have established strong and enduring links through our international offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Washington and Brussels.  The team helps to strengthen UKRI bilateral partnerships with other key R&I nations including, Japan, Australia and European countries such as Germany, France and the Netherlands reflecting the evolving nature of our relationship with Europe.  

 

The UKRO team in Brussels also delivers a subscription-based advisory service for research organisations (in the main UK Higher Education Institutions) and provides National Contact Point services on behalf of the UK Government. 

 

We collaborate with colleagues across UK Government to ensure strong UKRI engagement in government to government science and technology meetings and engagements with other nations 

 

We also playing a leading role and represent UKRI on various multilateral fora, including development funders. 

 

We manage and coordinate major cross-UKRI international activities, including the: 

  • Fund for International Collaboration (FIC) which aims to enhance the UK’s excellence in research and innovation through global engagement, strengthening existing and forging new bilateral and multilateral research and innovation programmes with global partners.    

  • Global Challenges Research Fund which works to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries.  

  • Newton Fund which has supported and built UKRI’s relationship with emerging 17 research nations as they move beyond aid, including China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa.
